He's broadly regarded as the king of comebacks, but this one
certainly sets the bar high: scarcely two weeks after he was
hospitalised after suffering a heart attack and underwent an
angioplasty, music director Ilaiyaraaja returned to the studio to
compose a song on Sunday.
The legendary composer arrived at Prasad studios, which is ironically the same place where he suffered his heart attack, and composed a track for Snehan's film Rajaraja Chozanin Porvaal, "Raja sir was not supposed to come, but he said that he had let down people by not going to Malaysia (for a show on December 28) and would not let people down in the new year and so he came for recording," said a source with the unit of the film Rajaraja Chozhanin Porvaal. He also added that the vocals for the song would be recorded on Monday at the same recording theatre.
It may be recalled that the composer had been rushed to the Apollo Hospitals on December 23 after he suffered a 'mild' heart attack and was kept there for a angioplasty to clear blocks in his heart. He was discharged after close to a week in the hospital. He had been preparing for a concert in Malaysia that was a typical Raja 'family' affair - with sons Yuvan Shankar Raja and Karthik Raja, daughter
Bhavatharini alongwith nephews Venkat Prabhu and Premgi Amaren.
Though the rest of his family took the 'show-must-go-on' approach and did the concert without him, the 'Isaignani' surprised fans when he appeared on screen live via video-conferencing and assured them that he would recover and come perform for them soon.
Sunday's recording was Ilaiyaraaja's first after the surgery and the first tine that he composed in 2014. His last release was Balu Mahendra's Thalaimuraigal and he has a few more regional projects that he has committed to this new year. Needless to say, the film crew are thrilled the composer's illness did not push their schedules any further.
